Vessel of the Spirit
Vessel of the Spirit
In 2000, Marge McAuley and Family commissioned a sculpture to honor her late husband Robert McAuley to beautify the entryway atrium of the new Mercy / UC Davis Cancer Center, Merced, CA.

The vessel is a timeless symbol, a utilitarian object that holds food or water for sustaining nourishment. Here, it represents a container for the elixir of healing medicine, spilling forth from a vase resting on the figure's hip. The human body is a vessel as well, temporarily housing the spirit, the soul. An eternal flame rests upon two crossing vertical lines that point upward toward the heavens symbolizing victory of eternal life.

Edition of 7 - SOLD OUT
Enlargement - 7'4" x 2"10" x 12"
The original was scanned by a laser, information fed to a CAD (computer-aided design) program, then linked to a lathe which cut a 7' block of urethane foam. We covered exterior in fiberglass before hollowing interior, gel coated textured finish, sanded smooth and painted in automative enamels to replicate a bronze patina.
Mixed Medium: fiberglass, gelcoat, urethane foam, aluminum, steel, wood, & enamel
Grand Opening of the MAC
The two were first displayed together at the Grand Opening at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center Exhibition in 1996.
The fiberglass foam enlargement is very light weight, which
makes this work ideal for transportation to multiple exhibitions - no forklift needed.
For Sale - to be cast in bronze upon commission

The enlargement would mirror the thin quality of the original piece, rather than the thicker structure of the fiberglass enlargement.
